This article explores a case study for the upgrade and full-scale load testing of a parking garage for a commercial office rental property. Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) reinforcement was considered for flexural strengthening and the performance was verified by full-scale in-situ load testing of typical bays before and after strengthening.

A family of reinforcements made from ultra-high strength twisted steel wire chords - 11 times stronger than a typical steel plate - Hardwire(R) affords end-users the ability to easily reinforce the interior and/or the exterior of a structure, making it ideal for upgrades to steel, wood, or concrete structures in both new construction and retrofit applications. In building applications, Hardwire(R) provides high strength (up to 8 kips/in) and high modulus (up to 30MM psi) in a very thin, ductile envelope.

For more than 40 years, various forms of polymer based flooring systems have been successfully applied to concrete surfaces. These systems have become mainstream forms of protection against aggressive chemicals, abrasion and impact while also offering an appealing aesthetic appearance. However, there is a movement to further enhance polymer based flooring systems as the need for improved structural capacity increases on our industrial floors. In reality, material handling equipment is getting heavier, buildings are experiencing loads for which they were not originally designed - including loads from potential explosions - and floors are being taxed beyond their capacity.

Silos Strengthened With Carbon Fiber Rods

Six silos, a cluster of four and a cluster of two, constructed of reinforced concrete and standing 150 feet high and 23 feet in diameter were being utilized as load-out cement silos. An initial inspection revealed radial and circumferential cracking that could have been structural in nature.


PCCP Water Pipe Strengthened With Composites

A 102-in. prestressed concrete water main pipe in Rhode Island catastrophically failed out and released 20 million liters of water. Condition assessment of the existing pipe sections revealed that other section of the pipeline could potentially fail due to corrosion of the prestressing steel.
